Heyburn Lake is located on Polecat Creek about 13 miles southwest of Sapulpa in Creek County. Heyburn lies in a picturesque setting of grasslands and gently sloping, wooded hills covered with postoak, blackjack and other oak with some hickory, ash, elm and cottonwood. Heyburn lies in a picturesque setting of grasslands and gently sloping, wooded hills covered with postoak, blackjack and other oak with some hickory, ash, elm and cottonwood. In the spring, visitors enjoy the flowering wild plum and redbud trees. Recreation facilities at the three areas on the perimeter of the lake include picnic areas, restrooms and showers, playground, boat launch and swimming. Sunset Bay offers tent campsites, Sheppard Point offers both RV and tent camping, and Heyburn Park offers RV sites. Catfish are abundant and some fishermen declare trot-lining is unsurpassed here. Largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish are also found in the headwaters and in the arms of Tiger, Polecat and Brown Creeks. During hunting season, project lands provide opportunities for waterfowl and whitetail deer. Heyburn Public Hunting Area covers more than 6,000 acres of project lands and provides hunting opportunities for squirrel, rabbit, quail, waterfowl and wild turkey. ***NOTICE*** (5/14/2013): Testing was performed on 5/7/2013 and while blue-green algae counts were elevated in the Sheppard Point Swim Beach area of Heyburn Lake, toxicity levels reported on 5/14/2013 are below the World Health Organization threshold. Visitors should not drink untreated water or let themselves or pets come in contact with areas of discolored water. Although swimming in this area is discouraged, visitors can still enjoy boating and many land activities around Heyburn Lake. Recent water quality tests were performed at the Heyburn Park Swim Beach area of Heyburn Lake and have shown that blue-green algae did not pose a concern for recreational use in this area at the time the test was performed.
