ROUTE 66 - THE SAPULPA DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT IS A COMMERCIAL DISTRICT IN SAPULPA, CREEK COUNTY, OKLAHOMA. COVERING ROUGHLY A NINE BLOCK AREA IN THE ORIGINAL TOWNSITE, THE DISTRICT CONTAINS THE MAJORITY OF HISTORIC COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN SAPULPA THAT RETAINS ITS INTEGRITY OF FEELING AND ASSOCIATION. THE MAJORITY OF BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1904 AND 1952. ALTHOUGH THE DOWNTOWN PREDATES 1904, THE MAJORITY OF EARLY CONSTRUCTION WAS FRAME BUILDINGS THAT ARE NO LONGER EXTANT. FOLLOWING THE OPENING OF THE GLENN POOL OIL FIELD IN 1905, CONSTRUCTION OF SUBSTANTIAL BRICK COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS BEGAN TO RAPIDLY OCCUR IN SAPULPA. A TOTAL OF NINETY-SIX BUILDINGS ARE INCLUDED. TWO WERE PREVIOUSLY LISTED ON NATIONAL REGISTER -- CREEK COUNTY COURTHOUSE AND THE BERRYHILL BUILDING. 53 OF THE REMAINING 94 BUILDINGS ARE CONSIDERED CONTRIBUTING RESOURCES AND 41 ARE CONSIDERED NON-CONTRIBUTING. BEYOND BENEFITING FROM OIL-RELATED PROSPERITY, DOWNTOWN SAPULPA WAS GREATLY AFFECTED BY THE DESIGNATION OF ROUTE 66 THROUGH THE AREA IN 1926, AS WELL AS THE DESIGNATION OF MAIN STREET AS PART OF U.S. HIGHWAY 75. SOME OUTSTANDING BUILDINGS INCLUDE THE PUBLIC LIBRARY ON WEST DEWEY AND THE ODD FELLOWS BUILDING ON E. DEWEY.
