Located in central Oklahoma, McClain County was named for a member of the 1906 Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, Charles M. McClain. In 1835, Camp Holmes was established and served the area until 1838. Early transportation routes were important to the county, including the California Road and military roads. Multiple railroads were constructed in McClain County starting in the late 1800s. The McClain County Museum in Purcell features artifacts, photos and genealogy records from the area. Purcell Lake offers boating, fishing and camping.
