Seminole County, located in east-central Oklahoma, was named for the Seminole tribe. Explorers such as Washington Irving traveled through the area as early as 1832. The Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad was constructed in Seminole County in the late 1800s. The Seminole Nation Museum in Wewoka houses Seminole artifacts and presents the history of the Seminole tribe, as well as photos and exhibits showcasing local history.
