Le Flore County, named after the Le Flore family of the Choctaw tribe, is located in southeastern Oklahoma. In the 18th century, French explorers and traders explored the area and contributed some of the place names that currently exist in the county. Later, U.S. military roads ran through the county, and Fort Coffee was built there in 1834. Many railroads were constructed in Le Flore County in the late 1800s to support the growing coal mining and forestry industries.

The Talimena National Scenic Byway winds through the Ouachita National Forest and offers beautiful views, especially during fall when the foliage changes color. Lake Wister State Park offers accommodations and activities.
