Atomic Annie has been on the grounds of the US Army Field Artillery Museum since 1964. It was produced in 1953 as a set of 20 M65 guns designed to fire 280mm nuclear shells up to 20 miles away. This technology was created before missiles and rockets were available as a way to launch nuclear weapons. Atomic Annie was a direct result of the government's race for technological advancement during the Cold War. Two of the twenty guns were taken for testing at the Frenchman Flat site in Nevada, including Atomic Annie. It was the only one tested and fired a 15-kiloton projectile as part of the assessment. The gun was nicknamed Atomic Annie for the damage it could do. Atomic Annie now sits as part of the displays in Artillery Park.
