Founded in 1919, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee is one of the oldest museums in the state of Oklahoma. One of the state's little-known jewels, the museum features exquisite art collections, more than 6,000 artifacts from across the world and traveling exhibits.

Father Gregory Gerrer, for whom the museum is named, was a Benedictine monk of considerable artistic talent. During Father Gerrer's travels to Europe, Africa and South America, he collected objects of artistic and ethnological value that are now displayed throughout the museum. The collection presents an impressive span of history and includes many significant works of art.

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art includes permanent collections of Egyptian, Greek and Roman objects. Considered by some to be the finest in the nation, the Egyptian collection carries the distinction of being the only regional museum that features an Egyptian mummy. Based on CT scans, an artist has recreated the skeleton and facial structure of the mummy Tutu.

Other collections at this Shawnee museum include Renaissance and Middle Age art through the early 20th century, as well as Native American, African, Oceanic and Eastern cultural artifacts. Cultural groups that lived in ancient, central Mexico are represented in the museum, including the Olmecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Aztecs and others. See artifacts highlighting Old World antiquity from Greece, China, Babylon and more. Visitors can view a contemporary collection showcasing many Oklahoma artists. In addition, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art offers exciting special exhibitions throughout the year.
