Winter Solstice Walks
Experience winter at a slower pace during Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center's Winter Solstice Walks. These special guided tours are offered at Oklahoma's only prehistoric Native American archaeological site and inspire an appreciation for the natural rhythm of nature and the seasons.
Learn about the powerful Caddoans who created the mounds between 900-1450 AD, how they became a very important leadership group and why some of the 12 mounds line up to solstice and equinox sunsets. There will also be information on the history of excavations, American Indian ceremonies and tales of unusual happenings associated with the mounds.
For those wishing to see the sunset, the 2 p.m. walk will end just before sunset, which is when the alignment will take place. Come out to experience one of the most unique historical sites in the United States as seen through the eyes of an archaeologist. Each two-hour tour explores the mound site and requires approximately one mile of easy walking in total.
