McAlester Community Mural
123 E Choctaw Ave
In 2011, local artists Anita Caldwell Jackson and Ted Welch worked with other Southeastern Oklahoma Fine Arts Association artists to create a historical mural on the Bargain Journal building in McAlester. These artists painted in the trompe l’oeil style, the French phrase for “fool the eye.” In this style, Jackson and Welch painted lifelike images from the past and modern times, even including themselves in the mural. Jackson was inspired to create this public art piece after viewing optical illusion murals by artist John Pugh.
