Festival of Spirituals
Join a time-honored tradition as Cimarron Opera presents its 50th annual Festival of Spirituals. This free community concert at First Presbyterian Church in Norman takes place each Palm Sunday, featuring a selection of new and familiar spirituals from a variety of singers.
This festival preserves and continues the long history of African-American spirituals, which arose as a way for enslaved Africans in America to share experiences when they were forbidden to speak. Considered to be the framework for American music genres like gospel, jazz and rock 'n' roll, spirituals are a powerful form of communication and expression.
Professional singers, students and members of the community will congregate to celebrate Palm Sunday with an inspiring display of spiritual music. This year’s line up includes The Ambassadors Concert Choir, The Northern Oklahoma College Jubilee Choir, Dr. Irv Wagner and the OU Trombone Choir, First Presbyterian Choir and many more. From acoustic guitar performances to exuberant choirs, there's something for everyone to enjoy at the Festival of Spirituals in Norman.
