Instrumental, pop and folk musician Mason Williams spent his early years honing his talents in Oklahoma City. Take a tour of some of the venues Williams performed at across the state, beginning in Duncan. Once you reach Oklahoma City, stop in at some of the pivotal spots where his musical talents started to take shape. In Guthrie, wrap up your Williams tour at his friend’s music shop, where the two performed together.

Stop 1: Simmons Center

Stop 2: The University of Oklahoma

Stop 3: Artspace at Untitled

Explore the ever-changing exhibits at Artspace at Untitled, where Williams’ work has been showcased. In 2007, this art gallery displayed Williams’ artistic contributions alongside those of other Oklahoma artists in the “Roots and Ties” exhibit. His portion of the exhibit included his “Double Standard” serigraph collaboration with Ed Ruscha, as well as posters, sketches, record covers and memorabilia.

Stop 4: Civic Center Music Hall

Take a seat inside the Civic Center Music Hall to see a thrilling live symphony show or theater production. Williams played here often, including a performance with the Oklahoma Symphony in January 1976 and a live set with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in March 1993.

Stop 5: Oklahoma City University

Trek across the Oklahoma City University campus, and walk in the shoes of college-aged Williams. In 1957, he enrolled as a music major and studied piano, flute and double bass. He also met many of his accompanying musicians like Mike Settle and Scott Fulton in classes here.

Stop 6: Hawthorne Elementary School

Stand outside Hawthorne Elementary School where Williams and childhood friend Ed Ruscha first met in their 4th grade classroom. The two spent a lot of time churning out art homework, which inspired both men to complete art collaborations in later years.

Stop 7: Northwest Classen High School

Stop 8: Double Stop Fiddle Shop & Music Hall

Step inside Double Stop Fiddle Shop & Music Hall, owned by Williams’ friend Byron Berline. When they weren’t touring with their pop/country/bluegrass band, the two friends played a handful of shows inside Berline’s shop.
