Threatt Filling Station

Address:
Route 66 & North Pottawatomi Rd
Luther, OK 73054

Though modest in appearance, the Threatt Filling Station on Route 66 in Luther played an important role for African Americans traveling during the period of segregation. The sandstone filling station was constructed in 1915 by the Threatt family near the area that is now known as the intersection of Route 66 and North Pottawatomi Road. It was the first black-owned business along Route 66 and offered travelers of any race a place to fill up their gas tanks, grab a bite to eat or even camp on the grounds. The Threatt Filling Station, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, has long been closed, but travelers are welcome to stop by this historic gas station during daylight hours.
