Located in northeastern Oklahoma, Muskogee County was named for the Muscogee tribe. In the early 1700s, French explorers and traders traveled along the area’s large rivers. Fort Gibson, the first army post in Indian Territory, was established in Muskogee County in 1824. The first railroad was built in Muskogee County in 1871 and more railroads followed, leading to new towns being formed. In Muskogee, the Five Civilized Tribes Museum features exhibits detailing the history of the tribes. Also in Muskogee, the Three Rivers Museum outlines the rich history of the area, where the Arkansas, Verdigris and Grand rivers meet. The Fort Gibson Historic Site features exhibits and living history programs detailing the history of the fort.

In 2000, census records showed 69,451 people living in Muskogee County. Countless resources exist for tracing genealogy in Muskogee County including legal records, cemetery records and a local genealogical society.
